KT200II ECU File Naming and Backup Management Guide
KT200II ECU File Naming Guide: Organize Flash, EEPROM, MCU and Backup Data
Professional ECU programming produces more than one file. A technician may create an identification record, original Flash read, EEPROM backup, MCU data, Virtual Read file, working copy and final Write file during one job.
Without a consistent naming system, it becomes easy to select the wrong file or confuse a stock reference with a physical backup. This guide explains a practical KT200II ECU file management method for workshops handling ECU reading, writing, cloning and recovery.
Why ECU File Naming Matters
File size alone does not prove compatibility. Two files can have the same size while belonging to different hardware, software versions or memory operations. A clear filename preserves the context of the file and helps technicians understand what was actually read or written.
Good file management also improves support communication. When a technician sends a complete folder containing the ECU label, protocol, file names and screenshots, the technical team can understand the job more quickly.
Recommended ECU File Categories
| File Category | Meaning | Recommended Handling |
|---|---|---|
| ECU-ID | Identification information returned by the protocol | Keep with ECU photos and software screenshots. |
| Original Flash | Flash data physically read from the connected ECU when supported | Keep unchanged as a master backup. |
| Original EEPROM | EEPROM data physically read when the protocol provides access | Store separately and do not overwrite. |
| Original MCU | Processor or microcontroller data when supported | Label the exact memory operation and size. |
| Virtual Read | Matching software supplied through an identification-based workflow | Do not label automatically as a complete physical backup. |
| Working File | Copy prepared for authorized editing or repair | Use a separate copy from the original master. |
| Final Write | The file actually selected for programming | Archive with the date, protocol and verification result. |
Use a Consistent Filename Structure
A practical filename should identify the vehicle, ECU, hardware or software reference, memory area, file source and status.
Recommended structure
[Brand]_[Model]_[Year]_[ECU]_[HW-or-SW]_[Memory]_[Source]_[Status]_[Date]

Original, Working and Final Files Must Stay Separate
The most important rule is to protect the first verified original file. Never edit or overwrite the only original copy.
- Save the first read as an untouched original master.
- Create a separate working copy for authorized calibration or repair.
- Use a new version number for every change.
- Save the final Write file separately from the working file.
- Record which file was actually selected in KT200II.
| Folder | Example Contents |
|---|---|
| 01_ECU_Identification | ECU label photos, ECU-ID screenshots and protocol details |
| 02_Original_Master | Original Flash, EEPROM, MCU and supported full-backup files |
| 03_Virtual_Read | Matching stock files obtained through the supported Virtual Read workflow |
| 04_Working_Files | Authorized edited files such as V1, V2 and calibration copies |
| 05_Final_Write | The exact file programmed by KT200II |
| 06_Reports | Voltage readings, screenshots, error messages and final verification notes |
Virtual Read Is Not Automatically a Full Backup
For some supported protocols, KT200II may provide a Virtual Read file based on ECU identification. This can be useful as a matching stock reference or for a supported writing workflow.
However, a Virtual Read should not automatically be renamed as a complete physical backup. It may not contain the current physical EEPROM, MCU data, adaptations, previous modifications or every memory area of the connected ECU.
When a file comes from Virtual Read, include VIRTUAL in the filename and store it in a separate folder. For a deeper explanation, review the KT200II Original ECU File Matching Guide.
Record the KT200II Protocol With Every File
Each file should remain linked to the protocol that created it. Record the ECU family, processor, connection mode and operation in the job folder.
Use the official KT200II Support List to confirm the controller and available operation. Then review the KT200II Operation Modes page for the relevant OBD, Bench, Boot, JTAG or BDM workflow.
| Protocol Record | Example |
|---|---|
| ECU family | Bosch EDC17C64 |
| Processor | Infineon TriCore family, if confirmed by the protocol |
| Connection mode | OBD, Bench, Boot, JTAG or BDM |
| Memory operation | Flash, EEPROM, MCU or protocol-specific full backup |
| Read type | Physical Read or Virtual Read |
Checksum and File Verification Records
Before writing a working or modified file, record whether checksum handling is automatic, manual or not available for the selected protocol. Review the KT200II Checksum and File Verification Guide when the file has been modified.
Also compare the target file with the actual ECU. Check the hardware number, software number, processor, memory area, file size, vehicle application and file source. A matching filename or file size alone is not enough.
Archive the Final Programming Result
- Save the exact final file used by KT200II.
- Record the date, technician and selected protocol.
- Save a screenshot of the completed operation.
- Repeat ECU identification when supported.
- Record the final diagnostic or vehicle test result.
- Store the completed job folder in secure backup locations.
Download Official KT200II Software
Use the official KT200II Software Download page to select the correct online or offline package for your device. Record the software version in every job folder because software changes may affect available protocols and displayed operations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should Flash and EEPROM files use different names?
Yes. Include the memory area in the filename so technicians can immediately distinguish Flash, EEPROM, MCU and other protocol-specific data.
Can I name a Virtual Read file as Original Backup?
It is better to keep Virtual Read and Physical Read clearly separate. A Virtual Read may provide matching stock software but is not automatically a complete physical backup.
Why should the protocol be included in the file record?
The same ECU family may support different connection methods and memory operations. The protocol record explains how the file was created and what it contains.
How many copies of the original ECU file should I keep?
Keep the untouched original in at least two secure storage locations. Use a separate working copy for authorized editing or repair.
